Claude Levi Strauss
Claude Levi Strauss was a French theorist. He came up with the theory of Binary opposition.
Binary opposition: related terms or concepts that are opposite in meaning. In terms of music pop and rock could be described as binary opposite.

Ideologies of Rock:
Writing your own song and playing an instrument.
  Isn't colourful
-  Political
Volume
-  Being a good singer is less important than energy.
- Drugs and alcohol
- Sexual
- "Authentic"
- Angry
-Looks don't matter
Ideologies of Pop:
- Melody
- "Good" singing
- Clean living
- Desexualised
-Non- political
- don't need to be able to play and instrument or write your own songs.

- Colourful.
There is a clear dichotomy between the ideologies of pop and rock music. Ideology affects representation. For example a rock band is not going to dress in bright colours likewise it would be unusual to find a pop singer who takes risks.

Types of Pop: white pop, RnB, Soul and chart music.
