Magazine conventions

Masthead- This is the name of the magazine. It is a technique for advertising the magazine. Often used on the contents page too. It represent the magazines logo.
For my magazine this is a convention that I will definitely use. It wouldn't be a magazine if I didn't use this. I will have to think very carefully about the way I design my masthead.
Dateline- This is the date of the publication. Usually the month and year. The date is usually a month later than when it is on the news stands.
This is a very important convention and should be on a magazine. When doing my research I have found that that the dateline is not on the front cover but rather on the spine of the magazine. It is likely that this is a magazine convention I will not be too bothered about using and if I do it will be really small.
Model Credit- This is when there is a line on the magazine front cover giving credit to the model in the image.
I don't think I will use this convention because when researching magazines, I have found that it is more common to find this convention on a fashion magazine.
Cover lines-  Cover lines are a way of advertising a magazine. Some magazines use lots of cover lines because they are quite competitive.
I will definitely use cover lines but not too many. I don't like reading magazines that use too many cover lines and they use so many that it covers the image. I don't like this and it is not something I will recreate.
Main cover line- This is a big cover line. It takes up almost a quarter of the front cover.
I will use this convention because it is very important in getting the audience to read the magazine. I need to make sure that I come up with a creative cover line and make sure I position it in the right place.
Bar code:This is standard for all magazines.
I think it is most likely that I will use a bar code. It will make my magazine look professional.
Selling Line: This is a short, sharp description of the magazines main selling point.
I think I will use a selling line but I need to make sure it fits the genre of my magazine.
Left third: A very important convention for selling the magazine. In shops where not all the magazine cover is shown the left third is what the reader will see. This means the title must be shown and short cover lines that are quick to read.
I think I will probably use this convention without thinking about it. However I will think about it, and make sure that it is presented in the best way.
The house style: a company's preferred manner of presentation and layout of written material.
Though I am only making one issue of my magazine, I will probably get a good idea of what my house style would be.
