NME-why I like it?, what ideas i can take from it and its uses and gratification.

A music magazine I really appreciate is NME. I like it because it often publishes artists that I like and also it is the same genre of music magazine that I would like to create  I would like to use the graphology of NME magazine to influence my music magazine.
The graphology of NME includes:
- Always in the top left hand corner there is the mast head, which is the NME logo. Unlike other magazines the mast head does not cover the width of the cover. I like this idea because  idea because it allows the reader to see more of the image.
- In particular in the magazine to the right the image is the most important part of the cover. In my opinion as a reader, I believe the image should be the most important part of a magazine front cover.
- The colour red is quite significant for a cover of NME. The colour red is not always on every issue however it is the colour of the logo. I believe that red is a particularly good colour to use on a magazine because of how bold it looks. There is a lot of connotations of the colour red such as danger and love. As red is quite an ambiguous colour I think it would be ideal for the indie rock genre of magazine because it could signify different meanings for different readers.
- If red is not used on the front cover it would be replaced by a really bright colour. -In examples below the colours pink and yellow are used. By having such bright colours used on the music magazine cover it suggests the power and importance of the magazine. Typically pink on a magazine would be associated with a women's magazine, however when it is used on the cover of NME it works because of how popular NME magazine is, it can take risks like using different  colours. Also it is accompanied by a darker background image.
- In media there is the idea of consuming the familiar. One of the reasons why I like NME magazine is because it uses the idea of consuming the familiar. Though not every issue of NME is the same, there is definitely a recognisable house style. Though I appreciate the unique covers of magazines like Ray Gun, they do not have a recognisable house style. With NME magazine you have an idea of what you might be looking for on a magazine stand but with something like Ray Gun, you may not.
- Another thing I like about the style of NME is the fonts. The text is always bold. I think you can tell from the fonts used on the cover that NME was previously a music magazine. The fonts are very simple but also very bold. I would like to use this idea in my music magazine because it makes the magazine cover very easy to read. I like that on most covers of NME the name of the artist(s) in the image, is always really big. The artist alone is sometimes the main cover line. This is an idea that I would like to use.

I also appreciate the pragmatics of NME magazine. The audience of NME magazine uses the magazine for many gratifications. NME gratifies its audiences needs for diversion, escapism, information and comparing relationships and lifestyles with ones own.  The most important aspect about NME is the music. A reader buys the magazine to learn about new bands or bands they like. Also they would read the magazine to relax and for enjoyment purposes.   A typical reader of NME would be someone who likes the indie rock genre. Someone might read the magazine to express their identity to others. They might take ideas of a particular lifestyle and may reflect these in their own life. I would like to hope that I can create a music magazine that would have the same influence on its readers.
