I think the colour red would work for an indie magazine. The colour red is quite ambiguous. It gives connotations of anger and hatred. It also gives connotations of love. Using the colour red creates a rebellious effect. I think red is a colour I will use. The only negative is that sometimes it is overused. I don't think the colour orange will work on a indie magazine. The colour orange connotes joy and sunshine. This image would not work for an indie rock magazine.
Yellow also gives connotations of happiness and it creates a positive effect. However sometimes the colour yellow suggests something is toxic. This idea of danger would be effective for an indie rock magazine.
When researching the conventions of magazines I found some information that suggested many editors avoid the colour green . Green can be the colour of money or nature. Sometimes we use green to describe jealousy. I think green would strange on an indie rock magazine and it is not really something I have seen done.
I think a dark blue could possibly work on an indie rock magazine. Yet, generally the colour blue would work. Blue is commonly thought of as a masculine colour. It represents knowledge power and integrity. I think blue could be too serious for my magazine, blue is commonly used in the business world.
Perhaps not on the cover, the colour purple may work somewhere in an indie rock magazine. Purple is a powerful colour it can be linked to royalty. I might use purple because it creates a powerful effect, it is very bold and I feel an indie rock magazine needs to create this.
I have looked at an NME cover with pink on. Typically I would not have said the colour pink would work on an indie rock magazine. Pink is a very feminine colour and we would assume to find it in a women's magazine. That said it did work on the NME cover. I feel you would have to be a popular magazine to experiment with different colours like this.
Black is a colour that is used a lot in everyday life. It definitely suits the indie rock genre because it can represent the hidden and the unknown. I have looked at a magazine cover with a black and white main image. This is something I could try.
The colour is another colour that we see a lot. White can mean purity. It is also known as the colour of perfection. The colour white is positive. White goes well with black. It is a very neutral colour which is why I think I could use it.
After this research and planning I have decide I will definitely use the colours: black, white and red. I found it very conventional for these to be used on indie magazines. I feel the connotations of these colours suit the indie rock genre.
