Research methods

Primary Research:
Primary research is a collection of primary data. Primary data is data that has been collected first hand. Questionnaires are an example of primary research. Primary research is research that you do yourself. The advantages of this research method is that it is the researchers own work. Also it allows the researcher to research specific topics and only the topics they need to research. However for marketing companies, primary research can be expensive and time consuming.

Secondary research:
Secondary research is collecting information that already exists rather than collecting your own research. Secondary data is good because it is easy to access for example on libraries and on the internet. There is issues concerning the reliability of this research method: it might be old information or it may not be the right information. Also the researcher does not own this information.

Quantitative research:
This research is based on numbers. Gathering statistics from surveys. A large sample of people must be surveyed to get reliable statistics.  This method is very accurate at providing a broad summary and large summaries. It does not really tell you peoples feelings on a subject.

Qualitative research:
This is research aims to find out peoples opinions and why they have that opinion. This research provides a lot of detail. Also it focuses on the individual. If this research method is used as well as quantitative data it will explain certain statistics. However it often means that less people are studied. It is hard to generalise and make comparisons.

....................................................................................................................................................

For my research I will use primary research because I feel it would be easier to understand having asked people's opinions myself but I will need to make sure I have enough time to carry out this kind of research and also that I have an accurate audience to carry it out on . I also find that secondary research is beneficial because it could save time but I must question the reliability. I have already used quantitative research when I have looked on websites such as the NRS and have got figures and statistics that help me realise the popularity of certain magazines. I believe qualitative research is ideal for planning a music magazine because it gives me and idea of what colour schemes and fonts people would like.
Mostly I think all research methods are relevant for this task but if I were to dismiss a method because of its disadvantages I think I dismiss qualitative research because it would mean less people are studied and that would not give a good idea of how most people would like there music magazine.
