Intertextuality

Many theorists suggest we are living in the Post Modern Era. The post modern era is the idea that in this era everything has already been done.
Intertextuality- The way in which texts (media) makes references to other texts
Intertextuality is very common in music. Musicians are often inspired by some one else. A few examples are The Beatles and Oasis. Or Madonna and Lady gaga. Intertextuality is a useful to understand the purpose of a text. Intertextuality can be significant when reading and understanding a media text.

Constructing and deconstructing an image:
When I take my photos for my music magazine. Before constructing an image one should consider how the image might be deconstructed.
An oppositional text is a deliberate set up to get an oppositional reading. An example of a oppositional text is the Beatles butcher cover sleeve.  This cover sleeve was created with the purpose of offending its audience. On the image the facial expressions are really quite controversial considering the rest of the image.  For my images I need to make sure my images don't cause any controversy.  In some images the typical conventions can be subverted. Particularly in Ray Gun magazines which I have previously looked at. I am going to try to make my magazine as conventional as possible. I need to include a motif that will make my magazine appear conventional.
Many people in this day and age claim they prefer a natural image that has not been edited. In reality people don't really prefer a natural image because they are so used to seeing glossy, hyper real images. I need to make sure I get the balance between real and hyper real right. I don't want my images to look so fake that it doesn't look like a person any more but I still need to make sure I edit my pictures to the right extent that it looks 'normal'
In the Kerrang cover to the right, the main image is Slipknot. As a reader when I deconstruct this image so of the things I could say is:
- It is artistic more than conventional.
- It has a similarity with horror films. However this is not a case of intertextuality because it is most likely that films with masks are a reference to slipknot not the other way around.
- The image is a little bit confusing and ambiguous.
- This image is suitable for the target audience.
- It is a little bit aggressive

This Nicki Minaj cover is the antithesis of the of Slipknot cover. If I was deconstructing this image some things I could say are:
- It denotes bright colours and cartoons which creates a very happy and positive effect.
- The image is very much hyper real. And the model almost looks empowering.
- This images is very much commercial. It is very conventional .
- It is cartoon and cute which is very much typical of the pop genre.
